Dial-an-Atheist 9-21-09 Rep. Mark Souder

http://www.vimeo.com/6715045

Chad Butterbaugh and Mark Allen host a live call in show about our Congressional Representative Mark Souder and his record on church/state separation and science. It is not pretty. The callers bring up the health care debate and the tone of the recent town hall meetings.

Links used on the show:

Congressman Mark Souder’s website.  Mark Souder hanging himself with his own words. (Really Amish?  Count the logical fallacies.)

See Expelled Exposed. Look up Richard Sternberg and the truth behind the fiction section.

My comments on Mark Souder bragging about being in Expelled.  I am sure there are more please add more links in the comments section.

FreeThought Fort Wayne supports the separation of church and state and the promotion of science and not necessarily any party affiliation.

The next Dial-An-Atheist is scheduled for October 19th at 7 PM. On Comcast Channel 57 and Verizon Channel 27.  The topic is yet to be determined.  Send us your ideas.  More later.

Thanks to all the cast and crew.  We have a talented and dedicated group of volunteers.

Damn, that was fast. Good work.

I’m very open to this being an open thread on Rep. Souder and Rep. Souder-related tomfoolery. For example, I was at a town-hall meeting of his when I was in high school, in ‘96 or so, and asked him what his feelings were on the then-new idea of the Communications Decency Act. He told me he couldn’t imagine not supporting it—which is likely true, as his imagination is quite limited. I very much wish I had that moment back, so I could press him on whether the concept of whether it could pass constitutional muster was something he could wrap his imagination around, but I was a tyke, and surrounded by crazy people, and didn’t.

Also, we ought to discuss why we’re not getting more calls. I imagine the issue would be moot if the show were weekly, but for a monthly show on the xth Monday, surrounded by reruns, it’s hard to get anyone but freethought diehards (i.e., members of our own group) to remember when and where to tune in. Publicity—we need it.

@Butter, I don’t know what you guys have planned, so my apologies if this is in the works or even been done, but you could promote it a lot better. I’m sure Andy W. can give you a whole host of ways to market the show but the very least is posting about it on the blog at least a week in advance. Also, I’m not sure if there’s any way to run 30 second promo spots on public access but you might also try producing your own PSA for the show and trying to get WANE and other local affiliates to run it. They have to run PSAs to keep their FCC licenses. I don’t think you could promote your show directly but you could promote the org and site which will get you more eyeballs and potentially more callers.

Anyway, that said, terrific job this time out. It’s good to see Souder refuted.

Leo, true dat.A 30-second promo would be good, especially as now there are a lot of episodes where we could gather clips from. Unfortunately, though, WANE, WFFT, and WISE are under no obligation to run our spots about anything, as we aren’t a 501(c)(3) organization. Because of that fact, and our perceived controverial nature, I doubt they would. It wouldn’t hurt to ask, though. To be honest, I’m not sure they’ve ever checked up on our status at the nonprofits I’ve worked for.

It would be good idea to publicize this more, especially with flyers and those promo spots. A once-a-month show is especially hard, though, because it’s not a meeting that someone would leave home and go to. It’s a reminder to sit on their couch, and turn on the television. If we could do this weekly, it would be a heckuva lot easier, but obviously we don’t have the (wo)manpower to do that.

Anyone have some ideas about promoting this show that is outside the box? Sound off below.

@Andy Welfle: You’re right. I keep forgetting FFW isn’t a 501(c)(3). It should be. But I’ll save that argument for another day. :D

Interesting site. You seem mystified by why Souder continues to be reelected while using his office to advance a religious agenda and to support a foreign policy based on a particular Biblical narrative. At a guess, I would say it is because IN-3 has a high percentage of authoritarian, fundamentalist, conservative “Christians” who pride themselves on believing as he does, but have no idea of all the unjust legislation he has proposed. The rest of the constituents either do not know who their representative is, think checking “Republican” means less government, don’t know for what he stands, are one-issue voters or do not care. It is no coincidence that 62% of white evangelical “Christians” agree with Souder: it is o.k. to torture if it “produces actionable intelligence”. (Despite their claims to the contrary, they do not Trust In God. They trust in their willingness and ability to enable torture, in their willingness and ability to break the law and speed to their next destination, and their willingness and ability to ignore the common good in the nation’s legislative decisions.) And do not forget that to stay in office he has the mouthpieces of at least two newspapers, a radio station, and a college that share his beliefs and in the case of the college, benefit by millions in taxpayer-funded earmarks. That is his grateful base.
