Greydon Square is a hip-hop artist, a veteren of the Iraq War, a student of physics, and a very outspoken atheist. He is controversial even within parts of the Atheist community, mostly with people involved with the Rational Response Squad. He doesn’t have a lot of the polish that major label hip-hop stars may have but I like his moxie. This is a video for his song “The Dream” from The Compton Effect. There are more song on his site, including the title track off his 2008 album The CPT Theorem.
The Dream
This song is dedicated… to all those people throughout human history…
Who lost their lives in the name of religion.
But more specifically, this song is dedicated to all those people throughout human history…
Who’ve killed in the name of religion.(Listen)
I’m dreamin’ of a world with no gods at all
No separation, nobody takin’ sides at all
No holocaust, no one indoctrinatin’ our children
or religious fanatics flyin’ plains into our buildins’
Everybody playin’ in the game of life which they can’t lose
Instead of killin’ for an invisible man which they can’t prove
Nobody dyin’ for a book; no crusades, no war on terror headed by BushI’m dreamin’ of a world where there’s no such thing as the Bible Belt
Instead of lookin’ up you look inside yourself
and when you do find yourself
You help somebody else
Instead of prayin’, you do well to maintain your body’s healthNow that’s what I call a dream
I’m just glad that I have one like Martin Luther King
Maybe this religion ain’t all that it seems, but it happened
And until it ends, I’mma keep rappin’I have a dream, dream, dream
My dream
Rational Response Squad
That’s what I call a dream

Thanks for posting this.
It does spawn me to think about what someone might define as a “sterotypical” atheist. From what I gather, quite a few atheists/agnostics are generally fans of science. Alos, by the posts and comments on this board, the individuals who are male (or at least USE male oriented names) far outnumber the people who are female (or who use female oriented names).
I’m wondering if there are any stats or polls on what race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. atheists tend to be. I’m sure in a perfect world this wouldn’t matter, but it seems to me history, geographical location and culture probably play a significant role in determining a person’s path to athieism.
Maybe the people who wrote the book Freakonomics can feature some stats on atheists/agonstics in a folllow-up book.
Wow, this guy is great. I wanted to get The Compton Effect, but the CD seems to be out of print. Has anyone found it anywhere?
It’s nice to be introduced to a black rapper that isn’t rapping about bitches, hoes, benjamins, nine millimeters, niggas, or blunts.
I know that’s a reflection on my own cloistered world. I guess I should get out more.
