Keep Watching the Skies

In case you’ve missed it, 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. In keeping with the FFW promotion of science, I have a couple inspiring news items.

Recently, a 14-year-old girl discovered a supernova. She is the youngest person ever to do so. I thought that it was cool to see someone so excited about discovery and science. She really makes me want to pick up a telescope and look for myself.

Also this week, NASA launched a rocket to the moon. No people this time, they’re just trying to see if they can find water at the poles and mapping it with high-res.

That is an awesome clip. I didn’t do anything like that when I was 14. The bests lines are “supernovae are happening all the time” and “the universe is pretty big.”

Andy, knock that off right now! What, you think I don’t own a telescope?

    …the universe is pretty big.

Understatement of the year. The Universe is the biggest thing in the, uh, Universe.

I wonder what the reason was for showing a pink, toy telescope? Contrast with the black background? Product placement? Sexism? Condescension? I feel bad for Caroline Moore, the 14 year-old girl who discovered the super-nova. Imagine finding a proof for some unsolved problem in mathematics and having to sit next to a green chalkboard with ‘2+2=4′ written in chalk.

If I ran the world, I would have called the bit something like ‘A moment of intelligence’ as a counter-point to what is normally shown on TV.

Sorry about changing the thread so often, but some of you may have noticed a hysterical response to my letter to the editor to the News-Sentinel today (6-22). Read it online; don’t waste money on that rag. It’s from Paula somebody.
I attempted to write the woman a private response, so as not to publically ridicule her. Unfortunately, like a lot of (I’m guessing) single women, she has listed herself only under a single initial and no address. Given crimes against women, I fully understand this.
Anyway, she said no one, including Bill-o, had used the term “Tiller the Killer.” Any Google search refutes this. You can start here:
    http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/05/31/tiller/index.html
Also, she points out that I didn’t condemn the murder of an Army recruiter by — oh my god! — a Muslim. She clearly thinks Muslims and liberals are the same thing.
To get to my point, my 30 days haven’t expired yet, so I can’t respond to her easily demolished letter by writing another to the N-S. But any of you can.
Do I hear any takers out there? Don’t be mean. Just point out her obvious factual errors. Obviously, there is no need, or advantage, to referencing any relationship with me or with FFW. Thank you, my friends. I know I can expect a spirited rejoinder in a few days.
By the way, my rib is coming along pretty well. Expect a social event here at the Anderosa sometime soon. I plan much drinkage.
    Cheers, John Anderson.

Follow-up. According to a J-G friend who shall remain anonymous, Paula is a regular Nazi contributor to the letters pages of both papers. Forget the not being mean. Spare her no rational point. On, on, my winged monkeys!

    Anon:
You’re quite right of course. All intelligent discourse ends when someone brings up Hitler or the Nazis.
However, in my own pathetic defense, let me point out that Paula (the letter writer) brought up Nazis first. Further, the term “Nazi” was used by the person who told me about Paula’s history of letter-to-the-editor wingbattery.
I am guilty of flinging crap, in other words, but at least I didn’t start it.
Otherwise, I throw myself on the mercy of the court. Mea culpa.
Now, would somebody please invest 10 minutes of time writing a letter to the N-S defending my position that right-wing commentators bear some guilt in the murder of Dr. Tiller?
I would cheerfully do it myself, but the N-S would hold the letter for dog knows how long since I wrote recently. Please, you guys are good. You don’t even need to mention me. Just point out her obvious mistakes. My wife has been slipping tranks into my soup to get me to calm down. If not for me, do it for her. Good lord, man think of the children!
