Another sign that the religious right is retreating even further into delusions after its pet political party lost power. From Think Progress we learn that televangelist Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University has shut down its’ student-run Democratic club. University officials say the Democratic Party, “…stands against the moral principles held by” the university. Democratic club members are barred from using the university’s name, holding campus meetings or advertising events. However, Liberty’s VP of Student Affairs claims Liberty is not trying to stifle free speech.

Let’s see, you can’t use the “school”’s name, hold meetings, or advertise, all because you’re declaring yourself as not being a good, loyal little member of the Grand Old Putzes.
Oh yeah, totally not stifling free speech.
What wil it take before this country rejects organizations like Liberty U?
Well, let’s be clear that Liberty U has every right to exist, even if, as I understand it, its purpose is to churn out right wing lawyers to attack the constitution. Well, that and make money for the Falwell empire. And probably there’s nothing illegal in how Liberty U shut down the Democratic club. The irony is in how the religious right is always crying about being censored on campus (cf. Ben Stein’s Expelled) and here is an instance where the religious right is clamping down on self expression by its more liberal students.
Fundie stance on free speech: “You can say whatever you like as long as it agrees with me.”
This story, to me, describes Falwell fundamentalists’ intrinsic unwillingness to consider any other point of view. (Also, their historical blindspots: Southern Democrats used to be the poster children for white Christian values. Seems quite odd that Liberty would poke their historical brethren in the eye like this.)
I’ll chase Joel K’s thought: Folks like these wish that people would have only one set of ideas… theirs. This way of thinking strikes me as irrational.
I hope that FFW people find Liberty’s action and the views behind it unacceptable, because I get a little of the same feeling when I read posts here. It seems to me that there is clearly no SINGLE good way of thinking.
Further, in a pluralist nation, those who insist that there must be a single way of thinking simply don’t seem rational. I reserve the right to ignore any and all crazies.
