Retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was on the Daily Show last night. She is launching her new site, www.ourcourts.org.
The site is designed to be an informative first-line resource for teachers and students to learn more about government, especially how courts work. I’ve only been poking around on the site for a few minutes, but already I’m thorougly geeking out.
According to Justice O’Connor, only one-third of people in an Annenberg survey could name the three branches of government. Something obviously needed to be done.
In response to the oxymoronic “activist judge” debacle, this erudite stateswoman has made a concerted effort to inform and educate the public just how the government is really supposed to work. In U.S. democracy, all three branches of government are separate and equal (which is the only just sense of the principle).
If protecting the minority from the tyranny of the majority is considered judicial activism, then we may as well set fire to the Bill of Rights.
I urge everyone to take a look at the site and learn a little bit more about what the judicial branch does for this country.
On a side note, Justice O’Connor is scheduled to be the last Omnibus Lecturer this year at IPFW.

Thanks for pointing out that great website.
Get to the Omnibus lecture early!!! It fills up fast.

One cool thing in that interview is that Jon very clearly self identified as an atheistic Secular Humanist… I don’t know if he’s said that on his show before (I watch sporadically online), but it’s nice to have popular figures out in the open about being god-free…
