Her Faith Was Affected

I’d like to pick up on one of the themes of Dr. Price’s discussion. Seeking prosperity.

I ran across this item about a flight attendant who was allegedly assaulted by Joel Osteen’s wife, Victoria. The flight attendant is now suing because her ‘faith was affected’ and she is now ‘traumatized.’

Putting on my skeptical hat, it smacks of a frivolous, desperate attempt to cash in on someone else’s good fortune. But then again, so is Joel Osteen.

By most readings of the New Testament, capitalism, material wealth, and outright greed are the antitheses of Christian teaching, but here is a pastor, now more a cottage industry, claiming that God’s ultimate plan is for believers to be rich and successful.

This doesn’t add up folks. To badly paraphrase Shakespeare, Something’s rotten in the estate of Osteen.

WTF? All this time I’ve been trying to dissuade people from their religious beliefs using reason and logic when, in fact, all it takes is a good elbow to the breast?!?

    I’m changing my tactics.

Watch out Laura Bush, here I come!

Sorry to not follow the thread here, but I just wanted to be sure to thank FFW for hosting Dr. Price last night. I was just kinda coming along with Leo to be nice, but I found the talk, especially the Q and A, very intriguing. (I was sorry that we had to cut out early.) Definitely going to check out the Top Secret book and the St. Paul one when it comes out.

Thanks again for bringing a scholar and freethinker of this caliber to FWA!

Great points, dystressed. It’s amazing how often believers, especially those of the fundamentalist persuasion, are hard-core militarists and capitalists, two concepts that are antithetical to much of the gospels. To be fair, though, the gospels are somewhat contradictory–no surprise–on some related points. For instance, Jesus does say that he “came not to bring peace, but a sword” and for capitalists, there’s the parable about the talents and making a profit on them. But then you read “blessed are the peacemakers” and all the warnings about the folly of material wealth. It’s enough to make your head spin!
