About the Book

The following is an excerpt from the review of Robert Price’s book, Top Secret,

America may be the land of plenty, but in the midst of our Walmarts, enormous supermarkets, and other signs of material surfeit, it seems that many are experiencing a gnawing spiritual hunger. New religions, spiritualities, and religious therapies attract throngs of believers to megachurches, Yoga classes, and the bestseller bookshelves. The latest popular fad in spirituality is Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret, which promises both success and spiritual fulfillment, and is endorsed by no less than Oprah Winfrey.

If you’re trying to make sense of all the offerings in this confusing spiritual wonderland, Top Secret is just the book for you. Noted religion scholar Robert M. Price examines the historical roots and the current appeal of today’s pop mysticisms. Critical and appreciative at the same time, Price applies his impressive background in theology and biblical criticism to put these trends in perspective. Among other popular movements and books, Price discusses:

  • Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose
  • Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret and New Thought
  • Helen Schucman’s A Course in Miracles and the popular works of Marianne Williamson
  • Deepak Chopra’s How to Know God
  • James Redfield’s The Celestine Prophecy
  • The Jewish Kabbalah, recently made popular by Madonna
  • Joel Osteen’s Prosperity Gospel and his popular Your Best Life Now
  • Diedre Blomfield Brown (AKA Pema Chödrön) and American-style Buddhism

Whether you’re a skeptic looking for a rational approach to understanding current religion or a seeker in search of a deeper, more informed understanding of popular spiritualities, Top Secret has much to offer.

Glad to see he takes a swipe at the JEWS too.
That’s in line with the New Atheist purge; you know, Dawkins and the “NOTORIOUS” Jewish lobby, Harris blaming the Jews for their own victimhood, Hitchens wishing they had been wiped out centuries ago…”We could have been spared the whole thing.”

    That darn Kabbalah!

But, all kidding aside, this is progress. In the 30’s the JEWS were responsible for the worlds problems.

Now, RELIGION is the root of all evil.

I love Price and have read most of his book. What I don’t get is the interviewer. He knows nothing of the subject - he knows nothing of the principals of Price’s book. That’s quite frustrating to listen to. Why didn’t he read Price’s book or at least do some research to find out what Tolles, Dyer et al are all about before the interview?

    RMPriceFan,

You are quite right to point that out. The reason is timing. (BTW-I produced the show and asked a few questions at the end.)

Jake did the best he could with the timing we had to do the interview after we found out he was coming in order to meet a television schedule deadline. We wanted a scratch the surface top level interview and basically let Robert speak which Jake was to ask questions as a lay person. He did that as well as he could in the time we had.

We will have Dr Robert Price in the television studio for an in person interview with a three camera set up . John Loftus will be on air talking about his latest book, too. We will pair up these deep level theologians together. It should be very interesting. I will post it here when finished. Yes, the book has been read. I hope you still learned something from the interview. I did.

    Nice kindergarden mock-

His work speaks for itself and is well beyond nah nah tactics. Tell you what Goldstein, how about you actually read Price’s and Loftus’ books and then watch the show in mid August and then come back with something with substance, instead of trolling our local freethought community with childish comments?
